The Serpentine Gallery renovation was an Arts Council Lottery funded project. A new entrance, a coherent gallery sequence, a new bookshop, facilities for the disabled, new offices and improved environmental conditions and security required by the Museum and Galleries Commission have been provided.

The Galleries now have increased natural top light and the side lighting from the existing window walls, augmented with daylight compatible artificial lighting systems, has been maintained.

The Gallery walls have full height MDF linings. Windows in galleries have dim-out and blackout to control rooflights and modulate daylight.

Extension above ground was not permitted, and the building below ground houses plant, workshops and storage space.

New external materials have been selected to match the existing red and grey brickwork, Westmoreland slate roofs and wooden sash windows.
