The project is a library extension for undergraduate and research use, together with archive storage and administration space. The existing building is listed Grade II, and the site for development is extremely limited, whereby the new library sits between the existing Founders Building and the rear 1960's three story extension block. The existing two story extension block was partly demolished to provide a new circular library, a link area and an additional floor for book stacks as well as a new basement level contiguous with the existing rear basement.
The whole building is upgraded to provide access for the disabled, including a new lift to all levels and new WC's. Internal finishes include Oak block floors, plaster walls, coffered plaster ceilings with integrated purpose designed uplighters.
