This project fills gaps in two adjacent 19th Century residential streets.
On the Gaisford Street site, the space of three terraced houses is filled
with five maisonettes, all with direct access to the street. The public
entrances are similar in form and scale to those in the existing houses.
On the Caversham Road site, the missing half of the large semi-detached
villa is replaced to provide two new maisonettes. The level and form of the
roof of the original villa is extended over the new structure. The new
fenestration has a contrasting pattern to that of the existing house, but
agrees with it in scale.
In both buildings the lower apartments have access to private gardens,
while the upper apartments have balconies.
The brief called for a community centre between the gardens of the new
buildings as a second phase but this was later abandoned.
Both buildings are finished in stucco, with acrylic finished metal windows
and slate roof and felt roofs.
